5 Steps to Remodeling Your Home

First Steps

The process of remodeling your home can easily be overwhelming, regardless of the scale of the project. It is crucial at the earliest stages of your remodeling endeavor to be knowledgeable and prepared for what’s ahead. With this in mind, Custom Built has created this checklist for what you need to be successful with a remodel of any size.

Here’s what you need:

1. Goals - What do I want?

This is the foundation for your project. As a homeowner, you no doubt have an idea of what you'd like to accomplish with your remodel, so take some time at the onset to carve out specific, attainable goals. Do you want to update the living room, or the entire first floor? Do changes need to be made to your bathroom sink or the whole plumbing system? Before cracking open your toolbox or making that trip to Home Depot, simply decide on what it is you want.

2. Budget - Can I afford it?

It doesn't take long to realize that home remodels can be expensive. Once you know what your goals are, it becomes much easier to figure out how much the cost will be to accomplish them. While tedious, a firm budget will give stability to your dreams of a new and improved home. Make time for this and save money in the long run.

3. Timetable - How long will this take?

No one wants their remodel to go on forever. As you build a framework for your remodel, don't neglect to set a firm amount of time in which you want this project to be completed. This, along with the previous items on your checklist, will increase the efficiency and quality of the remodel being done, no matter its size.

4. Permit - Do I need one?

This item is unfortunately one that gets overlooked, especially on smaller-scale projects. However, you will most likely need a permit for the work you are doing. If you conduct a remodel that violates municipal and state codes, this will cause setbacks if you ever attempt to sell the house, as well as fines.

5. Stylebook - What is this?

This resource is a must, regardless of whether your remodel involves a contractor, designer, or just yourself. As you spend time brainstorming and scoping out ideas on places like Pinterest, consolidate the things you like and know you want into a stylebook. This will serve as your most important reference as you move through the various phases of remodeling your home.

Ready. Set. Remodel!

With this practical checklist, you are setting yourself up for success as you begin to remodel your home. Good luck!
